At the northernmost tip of Chile, Arica is the driest city in the world, with an average annual precipitation of 0.76 mm (0.03 inches). The Abraham Lincoln School hosts the Orquesta Filarmonica Abraham Lincoln, under the direction of violist/conductor Javier N. Galeas Figueroa.

Janna Lower & prizewinner Rodrigo Altamirano
The Tropikordia Foundation sponsored the top prize, an early 1900's German-made violin (a Maggini copy) with bow & case, in the 2013 Segundo Concurso de Violín in Arica. Rodrigo Altamirano was the top winner, and will have the exclusive use of the violin for one year, at which time the instrument will be passed on to another deserving student.

Sheet music in Chile is extremely difficult to procure, and the orchestra's library was lacking in interesting and challenging music for the students. The Foundation provided a large selection of orchestral sheet music, including score & parts, from a variety of musical styles.
